Foundation — a swamplink research property

What's in my lip gloss?

The same sourcing discipline as the foundation study, applied to a much smaller, less standardized category: five SPF lip glosses, every ingredient list from the manufacturer's own FDA filing.

The corpus

66 distinct ingredients appear across 5 SPF lip glosses, and 48 of them (72%) appear in exactly one product. With only 1 ingredient reaching three-quarters of the corpus, these five formulas share far less of a common spine than the twelve SPF foundations do — a smaller, less standardized category, built by brands without a shared house style to converge on.

The sourcing discipline is identical to the foundation study: every product here carries an SPF claim, which in the United States makes it an over-the-counter drug, and the manufacturer must file the complete ingredient declaration with the FDA. Nothing in this corpus comes from a retailer listing or a transcription site.

Slide between two glosses

Pick any two and watch the formulas converge or diverge. Matching ingredients line up; the rest is where the products actually differ.

The common spine — such as it is

These ingredients appear in at least 75% of the corpus.

Why there's no cost, margin or R&D study here

Unlike SPF foundation, no product in this corpus is made by a company that files financial statements with the SEC. True SPF lip gloss on DailyMed turns out to be a niche held almost entirely by small, independent or direct-to-consumer sun-care brands — not the L'Oréal / Estée Lauder / Coty / LVMH conglomerates that make up the foundation corpus. That rules out a cost-to-make/gross-margin comparison and an R&D-vs-quality comparison the same way this project ran them for foundation: there is no public filing to source either one from. That's recorded here as a negative result, not left as a silent gap.
